Junior driver Brett Ormsby scored a game-high six goals as the fifth-ranked Bruins (10-4, 2-0) defeated Pacific (5-11) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Sunday.
UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and would never look back. Back-to-back goals from Ormsby started the period and after Eddie Wisniewski scored for the Tigers on a penalty shot; Josh Hewko added a breakaway goal to put UCLA up 3-1 heading into the second period.
Three unanswered goals from Bruins gave them a 6-1 advantage at halftime. Two extra-man goals from Ormsby and a score from Grant Zider highlighted the frame along with strong work in the cage from Joseph Axelrad who posted four saves in the first half.
The Bruins continued to pull away in the third quarter as Ormsby scored twice within the first two minutes to give UCLA an 8-1 lead. David Pietsch would lengthen the lead to eight goals before Wisniewski found the back of the net with less than a minute to play in the period. John Briscoe converted a Bruin penalty shot to put UCLA ahead 10-2 heading into the final frame.
Another goal from Zider and a score by Chris Pulido capped the Bruin scoring in the fourth period, while Wisniewski posted a hat trick with his third goal of the game with 19 seconds left.
The Bruins will return to Sunset Canyon Recreation Center next weekend when they host UC Santa Barbara in a noon match-up on Saturday. On Sunday, UCLA will host cross-town rival USC at noon.
