UCLA Men's Tennis Face USC, At Doubles Tourney This Week

This Week ... Bruins Take On `SC, At Pacific Coast Doubles

The top-ranked UCLA men's tennis team will travel cross town to face No. 23 USC this Wednesday, Feb. 28. The match will be held at Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus at 1:30 pm. After the contest with the Trojans, the Bruins will head south to compete in the three-day Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, CA. on Mar. 1-4.

Bruins In ITA National Rankings...

The Bruins, ranked No. 3 in February 7 ITA rankings, moved up several notches after upending top-ranked Stanford two weeks ago at the ITA National Indoors and are now the top-ranked team in the latest rankings released on Feb. 21. The Bruins last held the No. 1 distinction on April 5, 2000.

UCLA garnered all eight first-place votes from the ITA National Ranking Committee for 600 points. Stanford falls one spot to No. 2, followed by Duke, TCU, Texas A&M, Washington, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas and Mississippi in the top 10. Washington moves to its highest ranking ever at No. 6 after upsetting then-No. 4 Georgia 4-3 last Thursday. In singles, Jean-Julien Rojer remained at No. 10 in the ITA National rankings released today. Other Bruins ranked in singles include: Erfan Djahangiri (No. 52), Jean-Noel Grinda (No. 54), Tobias Clemens (61), and Lassi Ketola (89). In doubles, Grinda and Rojer moved up several notches and are now ranked No. 7.

About The Trojans ...

Wednesday's match between UCLA and USC will be the first meeting among the squads this season and the 82nd meeting overall with the Bruins holding a 52-29 advantage in the all-time series.

The Trojans are 7-1 this season and have won two straight matches, their last being a 5-2 win over 20th- ranked Fresno State on Feb. 21. USC is led by junior and 17th ranked Andrew Park and junior Ryan Moore, who play at No.1 and No. 2, respectively. Moore also teams with Nick Rainey at No. 1 in doubles. The pair are ranked No. 17 in the latest ITA rankings.

UCLA vs. UNLV...

The match against UNLV last Saturday, Feb. 24 was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up at a later date.

Next Up...

After the Pacific Doubles Championships, the Bruins will continue Pac-10 play and return home to take on Arizona State on Friday (Mar. 9) and Arizona the following day (Mar. 10). Friday's match at the LA Tennis Center will begin at 1:30 pm, while the contest on Saturday will begin at noon.
