Sept. 28, 2003
The seventh-ranked Bruins (5-3) opened their home schedule with a 12-8 defeat over ninth-ranked UC Irvine (6-6) at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Junior driver Brett Ormsby led the Bruin attack with four goals.
UCLA jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first frame. Ormsby and Michael March each scored with the first two minutes of action to give the Bruins an early edge. Peter Belden took advantage of the Bruins' first 6-on-5 opportunity with 4:29 left in the period, putting UCLA up 3-0. Anteater Dan Noon posted the first of his game-high five goals on an extra-man opportunity before David Pietsch found the back of the net to put UCLA ahead by three goals at the end of the period.
Noon scored twice within a minute of each other to cut the Bruin lead down to a goal at 4-3 with 2:50 left in the second quarter. However, UCLA rattled off three unanswered goals, one from Ted Peck and two from Ormsby, to close out the half with the Bruins leading 7-3.
After another Noon goal to open the second half, three more Bruin scores gave UCLA a 10-4 advantage, their largest edge of the contest, with 2:27 remaining in the third period. Yet, a late score by Tim Hutten brought UCLA's lead to 10-5 entering the final quarter.
UCLA was able to hold of the Anteaters' strongest offensive period, as the visitors posted three scores in the final seven minutes, with two fourth quarter goals from Peck.
The Bruins will return to action when they travel to Stanford for the Nor Cal Tournament next weekend.
