UCLA Places Fifth at ASU Thunderbird Invitational

April 9, 2005

The 12th-ranked UCLA men's golf team placed fifth in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Saturday at the Kartsen Golf Course in Tempe, AZ.

The Bruins posted a team score of 294 for a three-round total of 873 (+21). They finished 14 shots behind the winner -- UNLV -- which compiled a 54-hole score of 859 (+7). Strong winds contributed to the high scores as UNLV's winning mark was the highest since 1998 when the Bruins won the event with a score of 13-over par.

Pepperdine placed second at 861 (+9), followed by Arizona State at 869 (+17) and Arizona placed fourth at 871 (+19).

Freshman Daniel Im was the Bruins' highest finisher, tying for 15th place at 216 (+3) after posting a 74 in the final round. Freshman Kevin Chappell posted a final round 77 and tied for 23rd at 218 (+5). Sophomores Peter Campbell, Chris Heintz and Joakim Renstrom finished tied for 27th, 41st and 63rd, respectively. Renstrom posted the team's best round of the day, an even par 72.

Arizona's Kipp Biehle, playing as an individual, posted his third straight round under 70 on Saturday and won the tournament with a score of 206 (-7). Teammate Nathan Lashley finished second at 212 (-1).
