UCLA Women Defeat Mexican National Team, 2-1

Sept. 28, 2002

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - The third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team defeated the Mexican National Team, 2-1, in an exhibition contest at Frank W. Marshall Field Saturday afternoon. UCLA players accounted for all three goals, as Whitney Jones and Stacy Lindstrom scored for the Bruins, and UCLA freshman Iris Mora scored for Mexico.

Mora put Mexico on the board in the ninth minute, accepting a long pass from Maribel Dominguez and blowing past two UCLA defenders for a breakaway opportunity. Mora's strike beat UCLA goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo for the first goal of the contest. However, just three and a half minutes later, Jones tied the score with a header off a Lindstrom throw-in.

The tie score held up till halftime, with the Bruins outshooting Mexico, 10-1. The teams played more evenly in the second half, with UCLA totaling three shots and Mexico two. But Lindstrom made one of the Bruins' three shots count in the 57th minute. Nandi Pryce's free kick found Jill Oakes, who flicked it to Lindstrom near the goal area. Lindstrom headed it past goalkeeper Alba Garcia Felix for the game-winner.

Mexico had a great opportunity to equalize in the 85th minute when Mora had another breakaway opportunity against her collegiate teammates, but Lombardo saved her hard shot.

UCLA returns to regular season action on Friday, Oct. 4 when it hosts 11th-ranked Santa Clara at Frank W. Marshall Field at Drake Stadium at 7:00 pm. The game time is a change from previously-released schedules. It will be the first game at Drake Stadium under lights.
