Jan. 3, 2003

Box Score

Los Angeles, CA - The UCLA women's basketball team won its fourth straight game on the season and its third straight game to open the Pac-10 season by outscoring Washington 72-46 tonight in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins, now 8-4 and 3-0 in the Pac-10, used a variety of defenses to limit the Huskies to just 23.9% shooting for the contest in snapping the visitor's eight-game winning streak.

Washington managed to make just three of its first 20 shots attempts from the field as the Bruins jumped out to an 18-8 lead at the 7:09 mark of the first half. The Huskies never got closer than six points after that and trailed by 10 at the half, 31-21. The visitor's Emily Autrey scored the first basket of the second half to trim the margin to 31-23, but UCLA scored the next nine points of the game and led by double figures the remainder of the way. The Bruins' biggest lead, 26 points, came at the end of the game.

Freshman Lisa Willis led three Bruins in double figures with 17 points. Senior guard Michelle Greco added 14 points and junior forward Whitney Jones chipped in with 10 for UCLA. Junior forward Jamila Veasley grabbed 10 rebounds for the winners. Guard Giuliana Mendiola led Washington with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Loree Payne was the only other Husky player in double figures with 10 points.

The 42 points scored by Washington was an all-time low for the Huskies against the Bruins.

The Bruins return to action on Sunday afternoon against Washington State at 2 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. Washington will play at USC on Sunday.
