Release:  10/15/2002

Oct. 15, 2002

UCLA's 2003 recruiting class was ranked No. 5 in the country by Baseball America and No. 7 in the October 11th issue of Collegiate Baseball. The Bruins ranked highest among PAC-10 schools on Collegiate Baseball's list, with Stanford at No. 9 and Arizona rounding out the top ten. In Baseball America, Stanford picked up the third ranking, two spots ahead of UCLA.

The Bruins boast four freshmen who were drafted in the 2002 draft, including fifth-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers, Jarrad Page (San Leandro/San Leandro HS). Pitchers Hector Ambriz (Placentia/Valenica HS) and Paul Oseguera (San Diego/La Costa Canyon HS) were picked in the 28th and 47th rounds, respectively, while third baseman Brett McMillan (Shingle Springs/Ponderosa HS) was chosen in the 21st round by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rounding out the freshman class is righthanded pitcher Scott Botterman (Grapevine TX/Grapevine HS), infielder/right fielder Sean Carpenter (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS), outfielder Billy Eagle (Newport Beach/ Corona del Mar HS), second baseman Todd Greco (Mission Viejo/San Clemente HS), righthanded pitcher Daniel Miltenberger (Mission Viejo/Laguna Hills HS), outfielder Anthony Norman (Carson/Artesia HS), outfielder/second baseman Will Penniall (La Canada/La Canada HS), outfielder Thomas Roux (Los Altos/Los Altos HS), righthanded pitcher/outfielder Adam Simon (La Puente/Bishop Amat HS), lefthanded pitcher/outfielder Garrett White (Bakersfield/Centennial HS).

Head Coach Gary Adams commented "this is the best group of pitchers we have recruited since 1994."

"They will make an immediate impact and give us a lot of depth on the mound. McMillan is another Wes Whisler type of left-handed hitter. He has a smooth swing with lots of power. Simon, Ambriz, Oseguera, and Miltenberger were among the top ten pitchers in the state, including those who were drafted higher."
