Baseball Misses Opportunities, Falls To Pacific 7-5

Feb. 26, 2005

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Bruins stranded 12 base runners for the second straight game but unlike Friday's 9-0 victory, on Saturday UCLA failed to get the big hit or the big out and fell to Pacific 7-5 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA (7-5) put at least two runners aboard in eight of the nine innings while knocking out ten hits, but it was Pacific's Matt Berezay who launched an eventual game-winning, two-run home run in the sixth that made the difference.

UCLA starter Bryan Beck (0-1) struggled early, allowing four runs in the first two innings. Pacific's Anthony Jackson hit a two-run home run as the second batter of the game to give the Tigers' an early 2-0 lead. But down 4-0, the Bruins charged back to tie the game at four with single runs in the second and third and a two-spot in the fourth. UCLA eventually took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth before Berezay gave Pacific the final lead of the afternoon.

UCLA's Jarrad Page helped lead the Bruins' early comeback with his first home run of the year, a solo shot to center in the second which made the score 4-1. Chris Denove added an RBI double in the third and a Tommy Lansdon RBI ground out and a Will Penniall sacrifice fly tied the game in the fourth. Mike Metzger's infield single in the fifth scored Sean Smith to give the Bruins' a short-lived 5-4 lead.

UCLA would threaten in the ninth against Pacific closer Josh Schmidt. The Bruins put two runners aboard, courtesy of walks to Denove and pinch-hitter Matt Sharp, but Page, who had already homered and doubled, grounded out to first on the first pitch he saw to end the game.

Beck, who settled down after the early troubles, at one point retired nine Tiger hitters in a row. He struck out two and allowed five earned runs in his five-plus innings of work. Daniel Miltenberger, Kevin Brophy and Brian Schroeder combined to throw the final four innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one run.

Pacific (7-6) also received stellar work from its bullpen as three Tiger relievers combined to hold the Bruins to just two hits over the game's final 4.1 innings. Right-hander Gregg Reynolds picked up his first win of the year after allowing just one hit and no runs in relief of Pacific starter Luke Massetti.
