Carson, Calif. - Top-seeded Tobias Clemens of UCLA won two matches Thursday to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA West Regionals held at the newly-constructed Home Depot Center.
Clemens, ranked No. 3 in the nation, started the day with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over LMU's Mike Wojnarowicz. He then defeated UC Irvine's Brian Morton, 6-1, 6-3.
Also moving into the round of 16 in singles Thursday were Kris Kwinta and Alberto Francis. Kwinta defeated USF's Jorgen Arnesen, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round before knocking off San Diego's Nic Beuque, 6-1, 6-1. Francis moved on following victories over USF's Axel Elvik, 6-0, 6-1 and Fresno State's Greg Shearer, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Other Bruins competing in the main draw were sophomore's Chris Surapol and Aaron Yovan. Surapol defeated Pacific's Tyler Black, 6-0, 7-5 before falling to Pepperdine's Scott Doerner, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. Yovan, who was not 100 percent due to illness, fell to USC's Drew Hoskins, 6-0, 7-5 in the first round.
In addition, third-seeded Chris Lam was upset in the first round by USC's Scott Patterson, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
In doubles, Lam and Surapol fell in the first round to USC's Johan Berg/Drew Hoskins, 8-2. Francis and Kwinta were scheduled to play a late doubles match due to singles going long.
