No. 11 Santa Clara Upsets No. 3 UCLA, 2-1

Los Angeles -Despite owning an early 1-0 advantage at halftime, the No. 3-ranked UCLA women's soccer team was unable to hold off No. 11 Santa Clara, falling 2-1 in overtime Friday evening before 1,365 fans at UCLA's Drake Stadium. With the victory Santa Clara improves to 7-2-1 on the year, while UCLA drops to 7-2-0.

UCLA, which dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Broncos 5-0, took a 1-0 advantage at the 23:53 mark on a goal by Bruin freshman Iris Mora. Midfielder Stacy Lindstrom hit a high bouncing ball that produced a 50-50 ball between Mora and Santa Clara goalkeeper Erin Pearson. Mora was able to beat Pearson to the ball, heading it over the charging keeper for the Bruins' first goal of the match.

UCLA owned a one-goal advantage until the 66:21 mark of the second half when Santa Clara midfielder Devvyn Hawkins hit a 20-yard blast that slipped past Bruin goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo. Kristi Candau was credited with the assist.

With the scored tied at one, both teams had several scoring opportunities prior to the overtime period. Santa Clara's best chance came in the 61st minute of play when a Candau header ricocheted off the Bruin post. In the 80th minute, Bruin midfielder Allie True hit a hard right-footed shot that was saved by second-half substitute Alyssa Sobolik.

However, just one minute and 29 seconds into the first overtime period, the Broncos pulled the upset when Candau ran onto a Lana Bowen through ball, putting away a shot past a diving Lombardo for the 2-1 victory.

Both of UCLA's losses on the year have been the result of golden goals. The Bruins lost to Penn State, 1-0 in double-overtime back on Sept. 8 at the UCLA Women's Cup. UCLA is now 0-4 all-time against Santa Clara.

Friday's attendance of 1,365 was the seventh largest home crowd in UCLA women's soccer history. It was also the first night match ever at Drake Stadium.

Next up for UCLA will be a meeting with local rival Loyola Marymount this Sunday at Noon.
