UCLA Men's Golf Team to Host Gold Rush, Sept. 17-18

Aug. 20, 2004

UCLA will host the inaugural Gold Rush California Collegiate Golf Showcase presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf, Sept. 17-18 at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club in Beaumont. The tournament features 29 men's teams plus the defending NCAA champion UCLA women's team in a 54-hole, stroke play format. The event was conceived by UCLA Men's Coach O.D. Vincent, who felt it was important to assemble a high-quality field of teams exclusively from California. "This is a tournament of inclusion and opportunity--something our sport needs to perpetuate," said Vincent. "We wanted to create an opportunity for many California teams to compete against each other regardless of division, conference or gender. We will identify the best players in California." The event also fits the philosophy of the PGA of Southern California Golf Club, which has hosted numerous quality events. Recently the club hosted the Southern California PGA Club Professionals Championship and the 2004 Nationwide Tour Qualifying tournament. Also this year, the club hosted the Champions Tour qualifying event and the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The PGA of Southern California Golf Club's Legends Course plays to a par of 72 and stretches 7,303 yards and the Champions Course measures 7,223 yards and has a par of 72. Both and are rated as two of the toughest in the region. UCLA Head Women's Golf Coach Forsyth is unfazed by the length or difficulty of either course. "Ultimately I want our team to come away from the Gold Rush with a competitive edge," said Forsyth, the 2004 NGCA National Coach of the Year. "I think spending 54 holes competing against a quality men's field will require my team to use all of its physical and mental skills. It will test them in a way that most have never experienced and make them tougher and stronger competitors." Forsyth also believes improving the competition will strengthen her team's resolve. "As a combined golf program at UCLA, we take pride in being on the cutting edge of collegiate golf," said Forsyth. "We're always looking for ways to improve our players, and the more variety of competitive experiences we can offer them, the better they become. "We are playing in the Gold Rush in the spirit of competition," she continued, "and with the desire to test our skills and tenacity in another arena." Competing in the Gold Rush California Collegiate Golf Showcase presented by TaylorMade-adidas are the UCLA men's and women's teams, Cal Poly SLO, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Chico State, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State San Marcos, Fresno State, Long Beach State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Sonoma State, Loyola Marymount, The Masters College, University of the Pacific, Pepperdine, Point Loma-Nazarene, Redlands, Santa Clara, Stanford, University of San Francisco, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC San Diego.
