UCLA senior third baseman Brandon Averill has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and WASHINGTON STATE senior right-hander Aaron MacKenzie has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 10- 16, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Averill, from Orange, Calif., hit .364 (4-for-11) over the weekend, as UCLA took two of three from Fresno State. His three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed the Bruins past Fresno State, 13-11, on Feb. 14. In that game he posted a career-best six RBI, tops for UCLA over the entire weekend. He also smacked two doubles and scored two runs over the three-game set.
MacKenzie, from Perth, Australia, picked up his first win of the season on Feb. 12, throwing 7.0 innings of scoreless ball and posting a 0.00 ERA, en route to a 9-1 Cougar win. In the game he allowed only two hits and one walk, while striking out nine batters.
The Player of the Week honor is the second for Averill in his career, and the 40th selection all-time for UCLA. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first such for MacKenzie, and the 24th selection all-time for Washington State.
