San Diego, Calif. - Former UCLA All-American Sheila Douty (Diamond Bar, CA) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday night to lift the USA past Australia 3-2 in the final game of round-robin play at the 1999 Bank of America/U.S. Olympic Cup.
Team USA improved to 3-0 at the Olympic Cup, while Australia went to 2-1. These teams face each other Sunday in the gold medal game at 2 p.m. (PST).
Douty's shot to center scored Crystl Bustos, who had delivered a single earlier in the inning, erasing a 2-1 Australia lead, which had been culled on solo home runs from Natalie Shapiro and Peta Edebone.
Shapiro hit a two-out homer in the top of the sixth to tie the game 1-1, while Edebone's blast gave Australia a brief 2-1 lead before Douty's dramatic finale.
Lori Harrigan (Las Vegas, NV) picked up the win after pitching a complete game with six strikeouts recorded, no walks issued and four hits allowed. Tanya Harding, coming in as a relief pitcher in the bottom of the sixth, was saddled with the loss.
Team USA, which left the bases loaded twice and stranded 10 runners in the game, initiated the scoring when Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, CA) singled home Leah O'Brien-Amico (Chino, CA) in the bottom of the third. The USA left the bases full in that at-bat, as well as in the fifth inning.
Former Bruin Dot Richardson (Orlando, FL) and Teri Klement (Ft. Collins, CO) each had two hits for Team USA.
