Bruins to Compete in Fidelity National Intercollegiates

March 24, 2004

The UCLA men's golf Blue Team travels to the Fidelity National Intercollegiates today for a 54-hole tournament beginning Thursday at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will serve as the host school.

Thirty-six holes will be played on Thursday and 18 on Friday. Fifteen teams will be competing in the field.

The team of freshmen Peter Campbell, Chris Heintz and Joakim Renstrom and sophomore Breene Murphy will play as a four-man team for UCLA.

Earlier this season the Blue Team won the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational by 10 shots at the Santa Ana Country Club. Campbell placed fourth, Renstrom finished seventh and Heintz tied for eighth.

In other UCLA golf news, seniors Steve Conway, Travis Johnson and John Merrick were named to the 2004 Ben Hogan Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III or NAIA golfer. The list includes 33 of the top male college players from around the country.

The list will be pared to 10 semi-finalists on April 14 and reduced o five finalists on April 27. The final five will travel to the Colonial Country Club on May 6 for the awards presentation and banquet.
