Los Angeles, CA- The No. 3 ranked Bruins men's tennis team opens up 2001 by participating in the Sherwood Country Club Collegiate Cup this Saturday-Monday in Thousand Oaks. Teams expected to compete include USC, California, Pepperdine and the defending NCAA champion Stanford Cardinal.
UCLA will have nine players participating in the three-day tournament including Jean-Julien Rojer and Jean-Noel Grinda who are ranked 27th and 28th, respectively, in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall singles rankings. Also joining them will be 32nd ranked Lassi Ketola, 47th ranked Erfan Djahangiri, 58th ranked Travis Rettenmaier, 97th ranked Tobias Clemens, Chris Sands, Marcin Matkowski, and Derrick Nguyen.
In doubles, UCLA's number one team and 45th ranked Grinda/Rojer are expected to play as well as Ketola/Clemens, Matkowski/Rettenmaier and Sands/Djahangiri.
Two UCLA freshmen will be making their 2001 debut, Marcin Matkowski and Tobias Clemens. Matkowski, a native of Scezcin Poland recently enrolled in January and has posted impressive results in international play. Clemens, who hails from Bonn, Germany competed in the fall, compiling a 5-3 record in singles and doubles. Clemens has extensive international experience as well, ranking as high as 550th in singles and 780th in doubles on the ATP tour.
