Los Angeles - The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's tennis team played its final regular-season home match of 2002 Saturday, falling to No. 6 Stanford, 5-2 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 16-3 overall, while the Cardinal improves to 16-2. Saturday's match does not count in the Pac-10 standings.

In a battle of top-10 players, UCLA's Tobias Clemens, ranked 10th in the latest ITA rankings, pulled off a slight upset, knocking off No. 4 K.J. Hippensteel, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Also winning for UCLA on Saturday was Erfan Djahangiri, who defeated No. 57 Ryan Haviland, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 slot.

Both Marcin Matkowski and Lassi Ketola fell in three sets. At No. 3 singles, Bruin junior Rodrigo Grilli, who missed yesterday's loss to Cal due to injury, tried to play today but ended up having to retire in his match with Stanford's Scott Lipsky at 2-3 in the first set.

Saturday's match marked the second in a row that the Bruins were playing without Jean-Julien Rojer and Alberto Francis. Rojer is in Guatemala playing Davis Cup for Netherlands-Antilles and Francis went home to Texas for family reasons.

The Bruins will travel to the Pacific Northwest next week to take on Washington on Friday in Seattle and Oregon on Saturday in Eugene.
