Season-High 21 Hits Lift Bruins to 21-3 Victory at Washington State

May 23, 2003

Final Stats

Pullman, WA - The Bruins (27-30) put up nine runs in the first inning and eight in the fifth to catapult them to a 21-3 win at Washington State (18-36) on Friday night.

The Bruins scored nine runs in the top of the first inning as UCLA sent 14 batters to the plate. Every Bruin in the order would cross home plate in the frame. Seven singles, including two from Warren Trott, and two Cougar errors would lead to the offensive outburst. Starting pitcher Bryce Chamberlin was hit by Trott's second single and forced to leave the game after recording only one out.

UCLA would add another run in the second to take a 10-0 lead. Brandon Averill led-off the inning with a single to center field and moved to second on a ground-out. He would later score on an error.

After the Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the second when Derek Bruce scored in a fielder's choice, the Bruins erased the gain by posting two more runs in the third. Whisler got on base with a lead-off walk and went to second when Christian Lewis was hit by a pitch. A walk to Averill loaded the bases and Whisler would score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Thayer. Lewis crossed the plate on a RBI-single from Ryan McCarthy. After two and a half innings, UCLA led 12-1.

Eight more Bruin runs would score in the top of the fifth inning. A two-run homer from Billy Susdorf highlighted the inning. The round-tripper was the Newhall native's tenth of the year, which leads the team. Averill, Whisler and McCarthy each doubled in the fifth, while Trott, Thayer, and Preston Griffin each singled. By the end of the frame, every UCLA starter had recorded a hit, scored a run and driven in a run and the Bruins led 20-1.

The Cougars added another run in the seventh when Brandon Reddinger walked to lead-off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.

Averill added his ninth homer of the season in the top of the ninth for UCLA's 21st run of the game.

Washington State countered with a home run from Reddinger in the bottom of the frame. Yet, it would not be enough as UCLA claimed a 21-3 victory.

Bruin starter Casey Janssen (6-6) picked up the win for UCLA, allowing only one run on six hits in six innings of action.

Trott led the potent Bruin offense with a career-high four-hit performance. Whisler went three-for-four with four RBI and three runs scored. McCarthy also had three hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Averill went three-for-five with two RBI and a team-high five runs scored.

UCLA and Washington State will face-off in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Left-hander Wes Whisler will get the start for the Bruins.
