First-year UCLA head men's soccer coach Todd Salda?a has been named the Far West Region Division I Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas.
In his first season, Salda?a led UCLA to the 1999 NCAA Men's College Cup and guided the Bruins to a 19-3 record and the school's seventh consecutive MPSF Pacific Division title. He was voted the MPSF Pacific Division Coach of the Year and extended UCLA's streak of consecutive years in the NCAA Tournament to 17.
During the year, Salda?a's Bruins were ranked in the Top 5 all season long and achieved a No. 1 ranking for two weeks in November.
Salda?a is now eligible for the NSCAA/adidas National Coach of the Year Award, which will be announced at the NSCAA Convention in January. Other candidates are Ray Reid (UConn), Dean Foti (Syracuse), Pete Caringi (UMBC), Barry Gorman (Penn State), Doug Allison (Furman), Ian Collins (Kentucky) and Jon Leamy (Southwest Missouri State).
