Bruins Split Bay Area Matches . . .
UCLA traveled to the Bay Area last week for a pair of non-conference matches against No. 17 Cal and No. 12 Stanford. The Bruins started the weekend strong, posting a 6-1 victory over the Golden Bears on Friday in Berkeley. Cal's only point in the match came at No. 1 singles, where Conor Niland upset Benjamin Kohlloeffel. It marked only the third loss of the year for Kohlloeffel. The Bruins suffered their first loss of the season the following day, dropping a close 4-3 decision to Stanford. UCLA won the doubles point and won matches at court Nos. 1 and 5 before the Cardinal clinched the match with a win at court No. 6.
Surapol Surging . . .
Redshirt Junior Chris Surapol is the only undefeated regular in the UCLA lineup, posting a 4-0 record in dual-match play. He is 3-0 at the No. 5 position and 1-0 at the No. 4 spot. In addition to his singles success, he has also been outstanding in doubles, teaming with freshman Haythem Abid at the No. 2 position, going 5-0. Surapol, who was forced to redshirt last year with an injury, owns a 15-4 overall record in singles play and is 16-4 overall in doubles this year.
Doubles Success . . .
UCLA has won the doubles point in all five matches this season. The Bruins' No. 1 team of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel own a perfect 5-0 record in dual-match play and have defeated two top-10 teams. The duo owns wins over fifth-ranked Corkery/Pade of Stanford and seventh-ranked Schoeck/L. Shields of Boise State. UCLA's No. 2 team of Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol is also undefeated at 5-0.
