LONG BEACH, CA - UCLA junior Brett Ormsby scored four goals to lead the #4 Bruins to a 12-7 win over #7 Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's water polo game Sunday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. With the victory the Bruins improve to 17-5 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF while the 49ers fall to 14-11 and 3-4 in league play.
Long Beach junior Erik Geoffroy scored at the 1:22 mark in the first quarter to give the 49ers a 2-1 lead, but that would be the last lead for the 49ers the remainder of the contest. UCLA scored four consecutive goals to begin the second quarter, and tallied five overall in the period, to take a 6-3 halftime lead. Chris Pulido's second goal of the quarter, at the 2:43 mark, gave the Bruins a 5-2 lead. Long Beach would get no closer than three goals the rest of the game.
Ormsby tallied two goals in the second quarter and then answered back with one in the third and one in the fourth. His final goal of the day, at the 5:27 mark in the fourth, gave the Bruins a commanding 11-5 lead. Josh Hewko and Michael March both added two goals for the Bruins. Seven different players scored a goal for Long Beach.
UCLA goalie Joseph Axelrad finished with nine goalie saves, six of which came in the second half. 49er goalie Thomas Onyshko also recorded nine saves.
The Bruins will wrap-up MPSF play next weekend when they host Pepperdine at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Game time is yet to be determined.
