Stanford, Calif. - Top-seeded UCLA men's tennis player Benjamin Kohlloeffel is just two wins away from becoming the Bruins' first NCAA Singles Champion since 1975, as he moved on to the semifinals Saturday at the NCAA Championships hosted by Stanford University. Sophomore Riza Zalameda fell in the quarterfinals.

Kohlloeffel, a junior from Herne, Germany, defeated sixth-seeded Conor Niland of Cal, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Niland was responsible for two of Kohlloeffel's four losses on the season, as he now stands at 45-4 overall. Awaiting him in the semifinals is Mississippi's Erling Tveit, who upset eighth-seeded Travis Helgeson of Texas.

"I think he wasn't at his best game today," said Kohlloeffel after the quarterfinals. "He played really well the times I lost to him before, maybe a little bit the wind. It's tough to play in those conditions, you can't go for your shots, you can't go for the line. It's a little more putting the ball in the court and hoping something happens.

It was a tough day for the UCLA women at Stanford, as Zalameda fell in singles, and she and teammate Laura Gordon were elimanted in the doubles draw. Cal's Suzi Babos downed Zalameda, 7-5, 6-1 in quarterfinal singels action. Zalameda and Gordon lost to top-seeded Alice Barnes/Anne Yelsey of Stanford, 6-4, 6-1.
