Late Rally Lifts No. 4 Bruins Over No. 6 UC San Diego, 6-5

Oct. 21, 2005

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA got four of its six goals from freshmen as the Bruins completed a late rally to defeat UC San Diego, 6-5, Friday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Redshirt freshmen Patrick Morrison and Russell Simpkins combined to score UCLA's first three goals and fellow freshman Krsto Sbutega scored the game-tying goal at the 6:24 mark in the fourth period to help send UCLA to its 18th consecutive home victory.

The win improves UCLA to 14-4 on the season and 43-0 all-time against the Tritons. UCSD falls to 20-6.

UCSD's Jonathan Hopkins got the match's scoring started with a goal at 4:54 in the first to give the Tritons an early 1-0 lead. Then Morrison's extra-man goal at 1:02 for the Bruins knotted the contest at 1-1 heading into the second period.

In the second, UCSD outscored the Bruins 3-2 to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. Hopkins' second goal along with extra-man scores from Brandon Borso and Adnan Jerkovic accounted for the Triton's scoring. Morrison and Simpkins kept the Bruins close with goals at 1:45 and 0:19 in the period.

UCLA's defense took over in the second half as goalkeeper Will Didinger held the Tritons to just one goal over the final two periods. Meanwhile, the Bruins received goals from junior Logan Powell, Sbutega and the extra-man game-winner from senior captain David Pietsch at 5:26 in the fourth. Didinger held UCSD scoreless in the final frame.

The Tritons were unable to make use of their final scoring opportunity when, at 0:19 in the fourth, they took possession and called a time out only to have goalkeeper Colin McElroy's outlet pass intercepted by UCLA's Thomas Foley.

The physical contest was marred by 13 combined ejections between the two schools.
