Two Bruins Named Wooden Award Candidates
By: UCLA Athletics

Aug. 3, 2001

Senior center Dan Gadzuric and junior forward Jason Kapono have been named as pre-season candidates for the John R. Wooden Award, presented annually to the nation's top player in men's college basketball.

In 2000-2001, Gadzuric averaged 11.7 points and led the Bruins in rebounding (8.6), field goal percentage (53.4) and blocked shots (1.9). His rebound average was the highest by a Bruin since 1994, when Ed O'Bannon averaged 8.8.

Kapono, a 2002 Wooden Award finalist (one of 20) and an All-Pac-10 selection, led the Bruins in scoring (17.2), three-point field goal percentage (45.7) and free throw percentage (86.9). He also averaged 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists and set a school record with 84 three-point field goals.

The two Bruins were selected as the result of a national poll of The John R. Wooden Award Preseason Committee. The Committee selected 50 Preseason Candidates for the 2001-2002 Wooden Award All-American Team, based on last year's individual performance and team records.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2002, the ten-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. One member of the Wooden Award All-American Team will be selected on Sunday April 7, 2002 as the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year." The event will be a one-hour telecast on FOX Sports Net. In late December, the Wooden Award committee will release the Midseason Top 30 during a half-hour program on FOX Sports Net.
