WESTWOOD - The fifth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team played a five-game thriller on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion, but fell to No. 4 Stanford with game scores of 27-30, 25-30, 30-27, 30-24, 15-13. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 9-3 (4-2 Pac-10), while Stanford improves to 14-1 (7-0 Pac-10).
UCLA had its way with the Cardinal in the first two games of the match, led in game one by a 13-kill effort by Kristee Porter, who hit .435 on 23 attacks in that game. In game two, the Bruins jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held a 10-point lead as late as 19-9 before Stanford started closing the gap. The Bruins would hit .220 to Stanford's .077 in that game en route to the 30-25 win.
Game three was closely fought, and was tied as late as 27-27 before a Logan Tom kill and two Bruin errors closed it out for the Cardinal. UCLA was only able to muster a .086 team attack percentage in game four as they lost 30-24, sending the match to a fifth and final game.
Porter downed her 30th kill of the match in game five, becoming the first Pac-10 player this season to record a 30-kill match. It was the 18th 30-kill match of Porter's record-breaking Bruin career, three times the number of 30 kill matches posted by Pac-10 Player of the Decade and former Pac-10 and UCLA career kills record holder Natalie Williams.
The Bruins and Cardinal traded points through the first 11 rallies of the match, and changed sides with Stanford holding an 8-5 lead. UCLA scrapped back to a one-point deficit with Stanford holding a 13-12 lead, but a Bruin hitting error gave Stanford a 14-12 lead and a kill by freshman Ogonna Nnamani, her 12th of the match, gave Stanford the 15-13 game five win to take the match.
In addition to her 30-kill performance, Porter dug a team-high 16 balls and served a team-high four aces.
Senior setter Erika Selsor recorded 60 assists in the match, leaving her just five short of setting a new Pac-10 career record.
The Bruins return to action on Friday night with a 7 pm match against California in Pauley Pavilion. The match will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com.
