LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Yesterday the UCLA Women's Water Polo team lost to Team USA 11-5 in an exhibition game. It was the Bruins (20-4, 9-2) final game of the regular season. UCLA returns to Los Alamitos next weekend for the MPSF Championships as a third seed.
Bruins-turned-National-Teamers Thalia Munro and Natalie Golda helped Team USA balloon a 3-0 lead to 5-0 midway through the second quarter. The two one-time UCLA players each put away powerful perimeter scores, first with a bullet to the high left corner from Munro, and then on a power-play rocket from Golda. Gabbie Domanic, was the next to do some damage. The USA's lefty took a 6-on-5 pass from Ericka Lorenz and put it away from the right side to boost the U.S. women to a 6-0 lead by halftime.
The Bruins registered the only goal of the third quarter with a last-second 6-on-5 strike from the perimeter by Molly Cahill. That notched UCLA's first goal and first power play conversion of the game thanks to the USA's stubborn defensive stands. Former UCLA goalie and soon-to-be two-time Olympian Nicolle Payne was in the cage for the United States and put up six saves to help secure victory No. 12 for the USA in its lengthy Collegiate Tour.
The fourth quarter was a more successful scoring quarter for the Bruins, as Katherine Belden, Cahill and Jenna Murphy each found the back of the net for UCLA, The Bruins still couldn't quite match the USA's scoring prowess, however. U.S. center Heather Moody punched in a pair in the fourth to go along with a four-meter penalty shot from former Bruin Beauregard and another sweet shot from Lorenz. That helped Team USA to an 11-4 lead, leaving UCLA with the last word on a 6-on-5 score from Belden.
