GUADELOUPE, France - UCLA volleyball player Chrissie Zartman and her playing partner, Tracy Lindquist, won the gold medal at the inaugural beach volleyball competition of the World University Games in Guadeloupe, France, on Sunday.
Zartman and Lindquist defeated the German team 21-10, 21-12 to win the gold medal. The pair had defeated Mexico 21-10, 21-14 to advance to the final, and were undefeated throughout the tournament , losing a single game to France during their championship run.
The FISU web site reported that during the female quarter finals between the USA and France, an exceptional gesture of fair play took place on the central court: while they were warming up , the American player Christine Zartman plunged to grab a ball behind Maeva Castori, who was about to stumble over it and could have been badly hurt.
The Lindquist/Zartman pair has won five Junior Olympic gold medals while representing the United States.
