Pacific Palisades, Calif. - UCLA freshman Sara Walker qualified for the main draw of the 1999 Riviera All-American Championships Wednesday, defeating UNLV's Katarzyna Malec 6-2,6-4 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Prior to her match with Malec, Walker defeated Northwestern's Shannon Duffy 6-1,6-4 in the first round and USC's Kara Warkentin 7-6(3),6-1 in the second round. She becomes UCLA's only singles qualifier into the main draw, as both Abigail Spears and Catherine Hawley dropped first-round contests.
In doubles action, Elizabeth Schmidt and Spears are still alive after knocking off Harvard's Vedica Bajin/Andrea Magyera 6-2,6-4 in the first round. In addition, Petya Marinova and Walker won their first round match, defeating Stanford's Keiko Tokuda/Jennifer Heiser 6-1,4-6,6-2.
The main draw of the Riviera All-American Championships begins on Thursday.
