Chelsea FC, one of the top soccer clubs in the nation, trained at UCLA from July 26-Aug. 2. The English-based team is the two-time defending champion of the English Premier League and boasts a roster of superstars such as Michael Ballack (Germany), Andriy Shevchenko (Ukraine), Michael Essien (Ghana), and Joe Cole (England).
Sixteen Chelsea players played in the World Cup this summer, with 14 starting for their respective countries.
The team trained on the Intramural Field and utilized locker room space, weight room and training room facilities at the Acosta Center.
Midfielder Joe Cole said to the Associated Press about their training site for the week, "It's great. The training site is great. It's a lovely place."
The team was in the United States to play the MLS All-Stars on Aug. 5. The MLS team, which started former Bruin Jimmy Conrad (1996-97), defeated Chelsea, 1-0.
