Irvine, Calif. - Senior Logan Powell scored a career-high five goals and sophomore Krsto Sbutega registered four goals for the second time this season to lead third-ranked UCLA over No. 11 UC Irvine, 15-4, in a non-conference men's water polo match at Anteater Pool Friday night.
Powell scored four of his goals in the first half as UCLA (5-1) built an 8-1 lead at intermission. The Bruins staked a 4-0 lead after the first quarter after Powell and Sbutega each notched two goals. Powell's third goal came with 6:38 to play in the second quarter, as UCLA's advantage swelled to 5-0.
UC Irvine (4-6) responded with a penalty goal by Colin Mello at 2:35 in the second quarter. The Bruins answered with three goals - from freshman Kevin Kuga, junior Justin Johnson and Powell - in the final 1:26 of the first half.
Senior goalkeeper Will Didinger made six stops in the cage for UCLA, who improves to 4-0 in games in which Didinger plays (three starts). UC Irvine's Matt Garcia also registered six saves.
Powell, who hails from San Clemente, Calif., set his career high for goals scored with five. He has scored four goals once in his career - against California in a first-round MPSF Tournament on Nov. 25, 2005.
The Bruins return to action in their MPSF season-opener against Stanford at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 30. Game time is 3:00 p.m. UCLA defeated Stanford, 7-6, in Palo Alto, Calif., last Sunday in the MPSF Tournament's third-place contest.
