Los Angeles - The UCLA men's and women's tennis teams kickoff their seasons this Friday when they travel to Stanford, Calif. for the Wingspanbank.com/World Team Tennis National Collegiate Championships, Oct. 6-8 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford University.
UCLA will take on Mississippi State on Friday, Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday and Illinois on Sunday. The finals are to be played on Sunday.
The field for this tournament consists of 16 of the top men's and women's teams based on their combined season-ending ranking.
It will mark the first time ever that the UCLA men and women will compete as one, with teams made up of at least two men, two women and a coach.
Competing in the championships for UCLA will be women's players Sara Walker and Zana Zlebnik, while Chris Sands and Jean-Julien Rojer will represent the men. Women's head coach Stella Sampras will coach the UCLA team.
"This is a great opportunity for both the men's and women's teams to compete together and we're looking forward to it," said Sampras. "It's a unique format and unlike anything we've ever done before, but it should be fun."
Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.
