No. 3 Bruins Into NCAA Quarterfinals

Nov. 25, 2001

Box Score

Los Angeles - For the second-straight season UCLA will be making an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships after posting a 3-1 third-round victory over visiting Dayton at UCLA's Drake Stadium Sunday. The Bruins will face No. 6 seeded Florida in the quarters next Sunday at 1 p.m., also at Drake Stadium. The Gators defeated Clemson, 3-1 on Sunday.

With the victory, UCLA (20-2) sets the school record for single-season victories with 20 and also extends its home-unbeaten streak to a school record 27 straight matches. With the loss, Dayton ends its season at 17-6-0.

UCLA didn't waste much time Sunday, scoring in just the ninth minute of the match on a goal by senior forward Mary-Frances Monroe. Bruin sophomore Sarah-Gayle Swanson dribbled the ball down the left side of the field and crossed it to a waiting Monroe who put it in from about seven yards out.

UCLA led 1-0 at the half and didn't score again until the 71st minute of play on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Breana Boling.

It looked as if the Bruins were going to pull away with the 2-0 shutout until the 89:25 mark when Dayton senior Megan McKnight drilled a 25-yard free kick into the back of the UCLA net.

With less than a minute to play and UCLA leading 2-1, Bruin senior forward Stephanie Rigamat added an insurance goal just 21 seconds later at the 89:46 mark. Rigamat, after receiving a through ball up the middle from Emily Enrsdorf, beat her defender and slipped it past a diving Stephanie Weisenfeld for UCLA's third and final goal of the match.

"When you're playing a team that's ranked as high as (UCLA), you have a tendency to wait and see what is going to happen rather than causing the action," Dayton head coach Mike Tucker said. "We sat back and let them take the game to us".

Bruin goalkeeper CiCi Peterson came off her line on several occasions to stop Dayton scoring opportunities and finished with five saves in the game. Weisenfeld finished with a game-high seven saves.

"I thought we had several chances in the first half to put the game away," UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis said. "We talked at halftime that we needed to capitalize on our opportunities in the second half. Dayton is a good team and they have done very well this year."

UCLA and Florida have split the only meetings between the two schools. The Gators registered a 3-1 win over the Bruins at the USC Fila Classic back in 1999, while most recently, UCLA took a 4-0 victory over Florida in Gainesville last year.

"(Florida) is obviously a good team and I know some of their personalities quite well," said Ellis. "We played down there last year so it will be nice to be at home and not have to travel. It should be a great game. We've been marching through these games. We have one more and then we can dream a little bit."
