USATF Senior/Junior Nationals Update

June 22, 2006

Former, current and future Bruins are competing well at the USATF Senior/Junior National Championships in Indianapolis, IN after the first two days of competition as several athletes advanced to future rounds and two future Bruins qualified for the World Junior Championships.

Although the Bruins found success on the track, the competition was hit with inclement weather as Q\qualifying rounds were held in a handful of open events before a mid-afternoon, 90-minute delay took hold due to severe thunderstorms and lightning. Action resumed after 4 p.m., only to be halted for good at 7:30 p.m. as another wave of thunderstorms and lightning swept in from the south.

As a result of the weather delay, the first round of the women's 100 meters will be held Friday at 11:15 a.m., with the men following at 11:30. Semifinal rounds are currently slated for 6:15 and 6:30 p.m., with the finals at 8:25 and 8:35 p.m. The men's 10,000-meter final now is scheduled for 9:05 p.m. on Friday, with the women's 10,000m final at 9:40; the women's javelin final will be contested at 6 p.m. The women's triple jump final, halted midway through competition, also will resume Friday.

Junior National Results
Freshman Nicole Leach is well on her way to winning her third Junior crown in the 400m hurdles after running the fastest time of the day in the qualifying rounds, 57.84. Leach will run for the title on Friday at 10:45 am (PST).

In boys junior action, two future throwers qualified for the World Junior Championships in the discus. The 2006 Nike Outdoor Champion, Bo Taylor, won the event with a throw of 192-1 (58.55m), while future teammate Nick Robinson was second with a throw of 188-5 (57.43m). Robinson also finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 56-10.25 (17.33m). The World Junior Championships are held in Beijing, China August 15-20.

Darius Reed, an incoming freshman in the fall, fell just one spot shy of making the World Junior team, finishing third in the 110m hurdles in a lifetime-best of 13.47. Reed and three other men broke the U.S. meet record in the final, as he came up just .01 short of the second-place spot.

The 2006 Gatorade National Track and Field Boys Athlete of the Year, David Klech, also an incoming freshman in the fall, had the No. 4 qualifying time in the first round of the 400m hurdles, 51.37. Klech will run in the final on Friday at 10:35 am (PST).

Senior National Results
Monique Henderson ran the No. 2 time in the first round of the 400m, 51.17, winning heat one to advance to the semifinals on Friday at 3:45 pm (PST).

Jon Rankin notched the No. 1 qualifying time in the first round of the 800m, running 1:47.47. Rankin and Khadevis Robinson both ran 1:47.47 to lead the qualifiers. The semifinal of the 800m will be on Friday at 4:30 pm (PST). Rankin is also entered in the 1500m, which gets underway on Friday with the first round at 2:30 pm (PST).

Craig Everhart also moved on from the first round, qualifying for the 400m semifinal after finishing second in heat two and seventh overall in a time of 45.58. The semifinal round will go at 4:00 pm on Friday.

The final stop of the 2006 Visa Championship Series, the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships will be televised live on ESPN2 from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, and from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. All times are Eastern.
