BERKELEY, Calif.- The University of California women's tennis team lost a long and hard-fought battle today to the No. 7 squad from UCLA, 5-2, at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. With the loss, the Bears fall to 10-6, while the Bruins improve to 13-2. The match did not count for Pac-10 standings.
After nearly an hour in rain delay, UCLA dominated the top two doubles courts, doubling up the top pair of pairs, 8-4. Team captain Christina Fusano combined with sophomore Nicole Havlicek to hold on for an impressive 9-7 extra games victory over Catherine Hawley and Mariko Fritz-Krockow on court No. 3.
Both Bears would take that momentum into their singles matches. Fusano outplayed UCLA's Petra Marinova at the third spot, winning 6-4, 6-2. Havlicek blew Fritz-Krockow off the sixth court with a dominating performance, taking a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
However, those would be Cal's only points on the day. Despite several hard-fought and long matches, the Bruins got the best of the Bears. Cal's Catherine Lynch played a nearly three hour match on the second court, taking Sara Walker to a tie-breaker in the first set and the two constantly one-upped each other on deuces, but Walker ultimately took a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win from Lynch. Jody Scheldt staged a comeback on the fourth court, winning her second set 6-2, but Bruin Lauren Fisher got her act together in the third set, adding another point to UCLA's total.
