Long Beach - The UCLA women's rowing team, in their first official event of the 2002 season, sprinted past Long Beach State to capture victories in both the varsity and novice races.
The Varsity 8, rowing in the "Ms. Lin" (Vespoli Millennium), obtained an early lead against the 49ers and the JV 8. The Varsity 8 gradually increased separation to pull away and defeat the 49ers by two-and-a-half boat lengths. The winning time was 7:21. Long Beach State finished 2nd (7:28) in the competition, followed by the UCLA JV 8 (7:45).
In the novice race, it was all UCLA from start to finish. The UCLA Novice 'A' team, rowing in the "Craig E. Dial" (Vespoli 8), maintained good separation approaching the final sprint and powered through to take the victory in a winning time of 7:20. The UCLA Novice 'B' team finished 2nd (7:29), trailing one boat length of open water behind the Novice 'A' team. Long Beach State rounded the competition to finish 3rd (7:46).
"We're off to great start this season." stated head coach Amy Fuller. "The girls had a lot of internal expectations, and they found a way to transfer their hard work into boat speed. We still have a ways to go, but I'm pleased with this victory."
The Bruins return to action on March 23 at the Berg Cup in Newport. The event is scheduled to take place all day.
