Bruins to Host Three Matches This Week . . .
The second-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (2-0) welcomes three teams to the Los Angeles Tennis Center this week, beginning with UNLV this Tuesday. On Wednesday, former Bruin All-American Brad Pearce brings his BYU Cougars to town and on Friday, UCLA will host UC Irvine. The Bruins own a 49-2 overall combined record against those three teams. All three home matches begin at 1:30 p.m. and are free to the public. Those fans unable to attend can follow the live scores online at:

UCLA Shuts Out the Competition to Start the Year . . .
The Bruins opened the season by posting a pair of shutouts over NAIA power Azusa Pacific and Pacific last week. Azusa Pacific, the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA Division, actually put up a good fight despite the lopsided score. The doubles point was decided by a tiebreaker at the No. 2 position, while the Cougars also managed to take singles sets at court Nos. 2 and 6. UCLA's match against Pacific the following day was much more one-sided, as the Bruins won all six singles matches in straight sets.

UCLA in the ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA begins the year ranked No. 2 behind defending NCAA Champion Baylor in the ITA Team Rankings released on Jan. 11. Florida, Georgia and Illinois round out the top-5. Individually, Benjamin Kohlloeffel is the highest ranked Bruin, checking in at No. 8 nationally. He is followed by No. 14 Luben Pampoulov, No. 39 Alberto Francis, No. 62 Chris Lam and No. 99 Kris Kwinta. In doubles, Francis and Kwinta are ranked sixth. The next team rankings will be released on Feb. 1. Individual rankings will not be released again until Feb. 22.

Bruins Looking for New Streak in 2005 . . .
With its win over Pacific last Friday, the Bruins have now won 16 of their last 17 matches dating back to last year. UCLA's only loss since the streak of victories began on Mar. 12, was a 4-0 loss to Baylor in last season's NCAA Championship. The Bruins were riding a 15-match winning streak heading into the finals.

Newcomers Pick Up First Dual-Match Victories . . .
Three UCLA players earned their first-ever dual match victories last week. Sophomore Benjamin Kohlloeffel and freshman Mathieu Dehaine both went 2-0 in singles. Kohlloeffel picked up wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, while Dehaine was a winner at court Nos. 4 and 6. Freshman Jeremy Drean also picked up a win at No. 6 singles against Azusa Pacific.

Bruins at the LATC . . .
With the exception of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in February, UCLA is scheduled to play 16 of its 21 matches this season at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins' first road match isn't until a showdown with USC on Feb. 11. After that, the only teams UCLA will face on the road are ASU (Mar. 11), Arizona (Mar. 12), Cal (Apr. 8) and Stanford (Apr. 9).

Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
In 11 seasons as head coach in Westwood, Billy Martin has earned an impressive 255-50 (.836) overall record since taking over in 1994 following the retirement of Glenn Bassett. He has guided the Bruins to five Pac-10 titles, including three second-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. In addition to nine 20-win seasons, he has never had a team finish lower than fifth at the NCAAs.
