At the US Diving Senior Zone D Championship held in Los Angeles over the weekend, Paige Thompson qualified for this US Senior National Championship Meet on both the one meter and three meter events. Thompson's fourth and third place finishes (respectively) were good enough to qualify her to this year's Nationals being held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-29, 2003. This is the first time Paige will compete on the one meter event at US Nationals. "I am very proud of Paige and the development she has shown during the course of the year. I believe she is just starting to hit her stride and I am very much looking forward to seeing her compete in Indianapolis," said UCLA Diving Coach Tom Stebbins.
Joining Thompson will be Janine Strack, who qualified on the platform event for her second consecutive year. Janine managed a fifth place finish despite limited training due to an injury she received in December. "Janine has really had a tough year. After the break in her hand and the loss of her NCAA season, Janine never gave up on the idea that she could qualify this weekend. This was just her first meet since the beginning of December, and she did an outstanding job of competing."
UCLA senior Regan Gosnell won the platform event with a score of 434.75. Gosnell was pre-qualified for the National meet based on last year's 12th place finish. This is her first zone meet championship and a career best score on the US Diving Circuit. "This was a great tune-up for Regan. I am very proud of all of the great things she has done during her time at UCLA and this Senior National meet will be a great way for her to end her career. Regan's influence on our program will be felt for years to come."
The Bruins will leave for Nationals on June 23. You can follow all of the action through the US Diving website at: http://www.usdiving.org/USD_03redesign/events/03senior/home.htm
