Los Angeles - The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team cruised to an easy 18-3 victory over visiting Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center as 14 different Bruins scored in the match. The win improves UCLA to 18-2 on the season, while the Terrapins drop to 14-6.
Freshman Anne Belden, sophomore Jillian Kraus, senior Thalia Munro, and senior Kristina Kunkel each scored two goals apiece for the Bruins. Junior goalkeeper Emily Feher posted four saves and freshman goalie Brittany Fullen noted three saves in the match. UCLA scored its 18 goals on 32 shots, and limited the Terrapin offense to just 13 shots on goal.
The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by sophomore Brittany Rowe and freshman Tanya Gandy to open the first period of play. Maryland scored on a goal by Juli Jordan at the 2:08 mark to cut the UCLA lead to 2-1, but would go scoreless until the third quarter. UCLA responded with back-to-back goals by Belden to go up 4-1, and goals by freshman Katie Rulon and Kraus would give the Bruins a 6-1 advantage after the first period.
UCLA would post five more goals in the second period while shutting out the Maryland offense to lead 11-1 at the half. Three more goals in the third period would give UCLA a 14-2 advantage heading into the fourth where the Bruins posted four more goals to one Terrapin goal for the 18-3 win.
The Bruins will be in action on Sunday, March 26 against Occidental at the Sunset Canyon Rec. Center. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
