LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team defeated No. 11 San Jose State 9-4 to extend their season high winning streak to eleven games. The Bruins are now 20-3 overall and 9-1 in the MPSF. Tomorrow UCLA will wrap up the 2004 season when it hosts No. 2 Stanford in a game that will determine who will be seeded second in the MPSF Championships at the end of the month.
San Jose State came out strong in the first period taking a 1-0 lead at the 5:57 mark. Kristina Kunkel would answer back for the Bruins to knot it at 1-1 but Katie Morgan's second goal of the period would again put the Spartans back in front. However the lead would be short lived as Molly Cahill tied it at 2-2 on UCLA's ensuing possession and after earning a four-meter ejection, Cahill's penalty shot gave the Bruins their first lead of the game at 3-2. Morgan's third goal in San Jose State's first possession of the second period tied the game at 3-3, but UCLA would go on a 6-0 scoring run over the remainder of the second period and the third period to put the game out of reach. Cahill's third goal of the game ignited the Bruin offense, with Katherine Belden, Katie Flanagan and Lauren Heineck each scoring once in the second period to put UCLA up 7-3 at the half.
Cahill added her fourth goal of the game in the third period and Kunkel's second goal of the game finished the 6-0 scoring run and gave UCLA a 9-3 lead. The fourth period was an ejection-laden affair, with both teams combining for eight ejections. San Jose State would manage to score one goal and hold UCLA scoreless, but it would not be too little too late and UCLA would come away with the 9-4 win.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Feher finished the game with five saves.
Tomorrow's game against Stanford will be at 1:00 PM at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. After wrapping up the regular season the Bruins will head to Los Alamitos on April 24 for an exhibition game against the United States National Team. UCLA will then return to Los Alamitos, the following week for the MPSF Championships, which run from April 30 to May 2.
