SURREY, B.C., Canada - Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.) blasted two home runs, including a walk-off homer in the eighth inning, to lead the USA World Team past Australia, 4-3, in an elimination game at the Canada Cup. With the victory, USA improves to 7-1 and advances to play Italy later tonight in another elimination game.

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out, solo home run by Simmone Morrow and then went up 2-0 on a one-out, solo shot by Natalie Shapiro in the second inning.

USA World tied the score in the bottom of the frame. Nina Lindenberg (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) led off with a home run to right field. Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) reached on a one-out single through the right side and went to second on a ground out by Nicole Giordano (Saugus, Calif.). Australia starting pitcher Brooke Wilkensun leashed a wild pitch, and Berg raced to third. Natasha Watley then plated Berg and knotted the score at 2-2 with a single to shortstop.

Nuveman gave USA the lead in the third with her first home run of the game, but Australia tied the score with an unearned run in the sixth. Peta Edebone led off with a double to right-center field and went to second on a sacrifice by Marissa Carpadios. Edebone scored when Sandra Allen hit into a fielding error by second baseman Lovieanne Jung (Fountain Valley, Calif.).

Australia relief pitcher Tanya Harding, who entered the game following Nuveman's first home run, retired the side in both the sixth and seventh innings, and USA World pitcher Jennie Finch (La Mirada, Calif.) shut down Australia in the seventh to force the game into extra innings.

Australia threatened in the top of the eighth as Morrow led off the inning with a single to left. But Finch coaxed Sally McCreedy to ground into a double play and got Edebone to fly out to right field to get out of the inning and set the stage for Nuveman.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Nuveman crushed a 1-0 pitch deep over the left-field fence to give USA the win and eliminate Australia from the tournament.
