Ojai, Calif. - UCLA women's tennis players Riza Zalameda and Laura Gordon each won main draw singles matches Thursday in the opening round of play at the Pac-10 Championships at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
Zalameda began the day with a straight-set win over Washington State's Ekaterina Burduli, 6-4, 6-1. That set up a second-round meeting with No. 2-seeded Theresa Logar of Stanford. Gordon needed three sets to get by USC's Luana Magnani, winning 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. She will next face Oregon's Carmen Seremeta in the second round late Thursday.
Junior Alex McGoodwin fell in the first round, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to top-seeded Alice Barnes of Stanford. Sophomore Tracy Lin also lost in the opening round, falling to USC's Amanda Fink, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3.
In the Pac-10 Invitational draw, sophomore Elizabeth Lumpkin was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 winner over USC's Whitney Peterson. She will take on Cal's Jessica Shu in the next round. Anna-Viktoria Lind was also a winner, as she posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Washington's Allison Rainey. Next up for her is a second-round meeting with Arizona State's Rebecca Rankin. Ashley Joelson received a first-round bye and is scheduled to face USC's Judy DeVera in the second round.
Doubles play begins Friday along with quarterfinal singles action.
