LOS ANGELES - Becky Green tallied 12 kills, 12 digs and five aces and Chrissie Zartman added 20 digs as 10th-ranked UCLA swept Washington State on Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion, 30-19, 30-22, 30-26. UCLA improves to 8-3, 1-1 Pac-10, while Washington State falls to 3-11, 0-2 Pac-10.
UCLA led the entire way in game one, taking the lead for good at 3-2 on a kill by Brittany Ringel. That kill sparked an 8-1 Bruin run as UCLA took a 10-3 lead. Another big UCLA run midway through the game, this time an 8-0 spurt, pushed the Bruin lead to 22-11, including three aces by Green in that span. A Brynn Murphy kill eventually gave UCLA a 30-19 win in game one.
The visiting Cougars finally took their first lead of the match at 6-5 in game two. WSU led 12-11 before four-straight UCLA kills gave the Bruins a 15-12 lead. UCLA held a slim 24-21 edge late in game two, but the Bruins closed the game on a 6-1 run to take game two, 30-22.
WSU scored the first point of game three, which would prove to be their last lead of the match. UCLA did not allow WSU to score off their own serve for nine of the first 10 rotations, but held just a 19-18 lead before using a kill by Green followed by four-straight points off Green's serve to open a 26-19 lead. Washington State fought off four match points, but Rachell Johnson ended the night with a kill to give UCLA a 30-26 win in game three and a sweep of the match.
Green led all players with her 12 kills while hitting .333 for the match. Nana Meriwether had nine kills on just 17 swings while Nancy Barba added six kills on nine swings. Jennifer Todd paced WSU with 11 kills. As a team, UCLA served 12 aces in the match while holding WSU to just a .134 hitting percentage.
The Bruins hit the road next weekend, traveling to Arizona and Arizona State on October 1-2.
