This Week . . .
No. 14 UCLA enters one of its toughest weeks of the regular season with road matches against three top-10 teams. On Wednesday, the Bruins travel crosstown for a showdown with No. 7 USC. The Trojans enter the week 8-2 and are coming off a 5-1 win over San Diego State on Saturday. Texas, ranked No. 8 in the latest ITA Rankings, is currently 7-0 after weekend victories over Missouri (7-2) and Iowa State (7-2). No. 3 Georgia, which lost to top-ranked Stanford in the semifinals of the National Team Indoors two weeks ago, brings a 6-1 record into the week and is coming off an 8-1 win over No. 18 Tennessee on Sunday.
Most Recent . . .
The Bruins are coming off two home victories over Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine. On Thursday, UCLA didn't drop a set in a 8-1 victory over LMU, sweeping six singles and both doubles matches. The Lions were awarded one point after UCLA defaulted No. 1 doubles due to injury. Much like Thursday, UCLA rolled to a 7-2 win over UCI on Friday. After winning five of six singles matches (Annica Cooper was forced to retire down 0-3 in the first set at No. 3 singles), the Bruins went on to win two-of-three doubles matches for the 7-2 victory.
UCLA in the ITA Rankings . . .
As a team, UCLA debuted at No. 8 in the Fall ITA rankings and is now at No. 14. In singles, Sara Walker moved up from No. 46 to No. 16 in the latest individual rankings released on Feb. 16. Amanda Basica, who was unranked in the fall, is now listed at No. 48. In doubles, Basica and Walker make up UCLA's only ranked doubles team as they check in at No. 27. New individual and team rankings will be released this Wed., Mar. 1.
Freshmen Duo on Fire! . . .
With her 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 61 Maureen Diaz of UC Irvine on Friday, Walker, the team's No. 1 player, improved to 22-4 on the season. She hasn't lost since the Pac-10 Indoors back on Jan. 7 and is a perfect 8-0 in dual matches this season. On Jan. 16 she won both the singles and doubles titles (w/Basic) at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, becoming the first freshman ever to do so. Spears, ranked No. 9 nationally in the USTA Girl's 18s division last year as a junior, is 15-5 overall this season and is also 8-0 in dual-match play, playing primarily at the No. 4 position.
Hawley Returns to Action . . .
After being sidelined since Jan. 15 with an injury, sophomore Catherine Hawley made an impressive return to the courts last week in Bruin victories over LMU and UCI. Hawley defeated LMU's Velana Kassab 6-0, 6-0 in her UCLA dual-match debut on Thursday. The following afternoon she downed UCI's Liz Yim 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. This is Hawley's first season with the Bruins after playing her freshman season at Richmond University.
