The 1998-99 Bruins In the Dec. 2 MasterCard collegiate rankings, UCLA was ranked 14th and senior Byron Schlagenhauf was ranked ninth individually. In the first event of 1999, the Bruins captured third place in the PING/Arizona Classic with a score of 868. In the final event of the Fall season, the Bruins placed 12th against a strong field in the Golf World Invitational, Nov. 6-8, at Palmetto Dunes. In their fourth event of the year, the Bruins finished sixth at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiates with a four-over par team score of 856. UCLA recorded six rounds under par and four rounds under 70, including a school record 64 by Schlagenhauf. In their most exciting victory of the Sherfy Era, the Bruins won a three-team playoff to capture their first team title of the 1998-99 season. Tied after 54-holes in the Northwest Classic, the Bruins played the 455-yard, par 4 16th hole at Trysting Tree GC in one-under par to take first place honors over Washington and Oregon. In other results this season the Bruins finished fifth at the Topy Cup in Japan and 11th at the Ping/Golfweek Preview at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Senior Byron Schlagenhauf has won two tournaments this season and was ranked ninth nationally in the MasterCard ratings for Dec. 2. In October, he averaged 68.6 strokes per round. In five events, he finished first or second three times. He tied for first at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiates and won his first collegiate tournament by firing an eight-under par total of 208 (69-67-72) at the Northwest Classic. At the Pate Intercollegiates, he played the final 36 holes in nine-under par, highlighted by a seven-under par round of 64, tied for the low round of the tournament. His second round 67 at the Northwest featured a seven-under par back nine of 29 in which he birdied seven of the final nine holes. He finished second at the Topy Cup with scores of 74-70144. He leads the team with a 72.3 scoring average, six rounds under par, four rounds under 70 and four top 20 finishes. He is tied for the team lead with three top 10 finishes. He finished second at the Topy Cup with scores of 74-70144.

Junior Jason Semelsberger was a 1998 All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention selection. He recorded his best finish of the season, tied for third, at the Northwest Classic with a five-under par, 54-hole total of 211 (70-68-73). His finish at the Northwest was the fifth top 10 finish of his career. His stroke average of 73.4 ranks second on the team. He posted a fifth place finish at the Ping/Golfweek event with rounds of 70-73-76219. He tied for eighth at the PING/Arizona Classic with rounds of 66-72-75. His first round 66 was his lowest round of the season and tied him for the first round lead. He tied for 33rd at the Jerry Pate event with rounds of 73-72-74219. Semelsberger qualified and played as an amateur in the 1997 U.S. Open at Congressional and also participated in the 1998 U.S. Amateur at Oak Hill CC in August.

Freshman Parker McLachlin on Dec. 30, 1998 shot a course record and career best 59 at the Waikoloa King"s Course in Hawaii. His 11-under par round featured six straight birdies on a a front nine where he carded a 29. Through 15 holes, he was 11-under par and maintained that score to break Isao Aoki"s course record of 62. In five collegiate tournaments, he has averaged 74.4 in 15 rounds. That figure is the team"s fourth best average. He tied for 33rd at the Northwest Classic and his two-putt par on the playoff hole clinched the victory. He tied for 29th in his first collegiate event at Hazeltine. Although he tied for 43rd at the Pate, his second round one-under par 70 was his first collegiate sub-par round and was part of a second round in which the Bruins recorded an eight-under par team score of 276.

Sophomore Mike Vera has averaged 77.8 in eight rounds. He tied for 18th at the Topy Cup, his second career top 20 finish. In his other appearance this season, he tied for 58th at the PING/Arizona Collegiate, but played the final 36 holes in six over par.

Sophomore Kevin Bodlovich played in his first tournament as a Bruin and recorded a solid results by tying for 33rd place. His first round 70 put him in a tie for 11th after 18 holes. For the tournament he averaged 73.0 in three rounds.

Sophomore Jeff McGraw has averaged 73.9 in 11 rounds this season. He finished sixth in the Golf World Invitational, a season best, with rounds of 70-70-73213, three-under par. He tied for 15th at the Pate tournament with scores of 69-67-77213, even par. His 67 established a career best and his finish was a season best. He tied for 26th at the Northwest and his up-and-down par on the playoff hole enabled the Bruins to remain in contention for the title. He has posted five rounds under par, tied for the team lead, and two rounds under 70, which ranks second.

Sophomore Ross Fulgentis earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention acclaim in 1998. His stroke average continued to drop after his game improved late in the Fall. His scores at the Northwest event were 75-74-77 226. He shot a season best one-under par 70 at the Jerry Pate event. He placed in a tie for 46th at the Topy Cup and has averaged 77.0 in 11 rounds.

Head Coach Brad Sherfy earned 1998 Pac-10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Bruins to five tournament victories, the most by a UCLA team in 11 years. Four years ago, the Bruins were ranked 64th nationally and have been ranked as high as 10th. Sherfy, a 1978 UCLA golf All-American, guided the 1997 Bruins to their first NCAA appearance since 1993. An outstanding player, Sherfy has played in four U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships and won more than 80 events on various satellite tours. He finished in a tie for third at the 1996 PGA Club Professional Championship at PGA West. Sherfy"s 72-hole score of 274 (68-67-65-74) was 14-under par. In 1998, Sherfy qualified and played in the Buick Open (San Diego) and Nissan Open (Los Angeles).
