Sept. 18, 2006
Sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin (Palmdale, Calif./Littlerock HS) of the UCLA Men's Soccer team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week (Sept. 11-17).
Griffin had a hand in three of UCLA's four goals scored in a pair of victories over Top 10 opponents (2-1 over No. 7 Santa Clara and 2-0 over No. 8 San Francisco). Against Santa Clara, he broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 66:36, and just 19 seconds later, assisted on Jason Leopoldo's goal that put UCLA up 2-0. Griffin, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday, also scored first for UCLA against San Francisco, striking at 16:19 after receiving a pass from Chance Myers and dribbling between two defenders to take the shot. Griffin, who is this week's College Soccer News National Player of the Week, leads UCLA in scoring with five goals and 11 points in just seven games, already surpassing last year's total.
This is Griffin's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
Also nominated: Lauren Cheney, W. Soccer; Tiffany Joh, W. Golf; Nana Meriwether, W. Volleyball; Grant Zider, M. Water Polo.
