UCLA Tops No. 5 Oregon State, 3-1

Corvallis, Ore. - UCLA shut down No. 5 Oregon State for a 3-1 win over the Beavers on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium in the Bruins' regular season finale. UCLA ends the regular season with a 32-23 overall record and a 13-10 mark in the Pac-10 while OSU finishes at 39-14 and 16-7 in the Pac-10.

Fresham Jermaine Curtis led the way for UCLA going 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Brandon Crawford went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, and freshman Cody Decker had a RBI single.

Junior Dave Huff (7-3) tossed 7.1 innings allowing just one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts for the win.

Junior Tyson Brummett went the final 1.2 innings with a strikeout to earn his first save of the season.

Huff and Brummett held OSU to just six hits, as the Beavers entered the game outscoring opponents 48-8 in their last four games, and posting nine-or-more runs in the previous five-consecutive contests.

UCLA went up 1-0 on the Beavers in the top of the first inning. Curtis was hit by a pitch, and senior Chris Jensen walked to give UCLA runners at first and second. With two outs, Decker hit a RBI single to right field to score Curtis from second. Senior Sean Smith followed with a walk to load up the bases, but freshman Blair Dunlap popped up to shortstop to end the inning and leave the bases juiced.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Crawford tripled past a diving John Wallace in center field with one out. Curtis then scored Crawford from third on a sacrifice fly to center.

Huff allowed just three hits and two walks through five scoreless innings before giving up a bloop RBI single to right to Shea McFeely in the sixth, as OSU cut the UCLA lead to 2-1.

UCLA went up 3-1 in the seventh inning on a RBI single to center by Curtis to score freshman Ryan Babineau from second.

UCLA will await its postseason fate on Monday, May 29. The selections for the 2006 NCAA Championships will be announced at 9:30 a.m. on ESPN.
