BERKELEY, Calif. -
Brett Ormsby (Fr., El Cajon/Valhalla) converted a four-meter penalty shot at the end of the first overtime period to give UCLA a 7-6 victory over Long Beach State at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The No. 2-seeded Bruins (15-4) finished third in the tournament and remain alive for a berth in next weekend's NCAA Final Four. UCLA needs a victory by top-seeded Stanford over California in the final to claim the NCAA's at-large bid. Long Beach State finished 13-7 on the season.
Matt Flesher (Jr., Diamond Bar/Brea Olinda) converted a six-on-five opportunity on UCLA's first possession of overtime to put the Bruins ahead 6-5. Long Beach responded on a tip-in by Nathan Allard to tie the game with 17 seconds left in the period.
Alfonso Tucay (Sr., Burbank/Burroughs) was then interfered in the two-meter area by the 49er defense and drew a penalty at the buzzer, setting the stage for Ormsby's eventual game-winner.
Long Beach's Scott Miller missed two opportunities in the final minute of the second overtime as the Bruin defense held.
"We rebounded in the second half and stepped up our intensity in overtime," Bruin head coach Adam Krikorian said.
The pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be announced at the conclusion of the MPSF Championships (about 5 p.m. Sunday).
