Louisville, Ky. - Top-seeded UCLA had little trouble against San Diego State at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships Thursday, defeating the Aztecs, 4-0 in first-round action at the Louisville Tennis Club. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 10-0 on the year and will face eighth-seeded Duke in tomorrow's second round. The Blue Devils were 4-3 winners over No. 9 Texas on Thursday.
As usual, the Bruins captured the one point awarded for doubles play, taking victories on the bottom two courts. At No. 3 doubles, UCLA's Erfan Djahangiri and Alberto Francis defeated Daniel Jung/Gabe Coren, 8-1. In the No. 2 spot, 39th-ranked Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola registered an 8-3 win over SDSU's Armando Carrascosa/Felix Hardt. The No. 1 doubles spot was tied at 5-5 when play was suspended.
In singles action, Francis quickly put the Bruins ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over SDSU's Mike Coelho in the No. 6 position. Rodrigo Grilli then gave UCLA a 3-0 advantage with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Felix Hardt at the No. 3 spot.
Clemens ended up clinching the match for UCLA at the No. 1 position, downing countryman Oliver Maiberger, 6-4, 6-1.
Ketola was up a set and serving at 4-3 in the second when play was suspended. Marcin Matkowski had split, while Djahangiri was down a set tied at 2-2 in the second.
UCLA improves to 21-2 all-time in first-round matches at the Indoors. The Bruins, who have reached the finals five of the last seven years, are looking to add to its seven USTA/ITA titles. UCLA has beat Duke three of the last four years at this event.
