Malibu, Calif. - Second-seeded Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA was one of three Bruin tennis players to advance to the round of 16 after picking up two victories at the Omni Hotels Region VIII South Championships at Pepperdine University on Thursday.
Rojer recorded two straight-set victories over UCSB's Alex Yaftali and UCI's Sean O'Conner in the first and second rounds respectively. He will take on Arizona's Carl Hagman on Friday.
Sixth-seeded Tobias Clemens beat qualifier Renouk Wijemanne of UCI in the first round and Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego in the second. He will face Pepperdine's Steve Racioppi on Friday.
Marcin Matkowski had little trouble in both of his matches Friday, defeating LMU's Beau Berglund and Pepperdine's Brian Wright, both in straight sets. He will take on eight-seeded Steven Capriati of Arizona on Friday.
Both Derrick Nguyen and fifth-seeded Erfan Djahangiri won first-round matches Thursday, but fell in the second round to two Pepperdine players. Nguyen was beaten by Calle Hansen and Djahangiri fell to Diego Acuna. Lassi Ketola was upset in the first round by Arizona's Bruno Arapovic.
In doubles, top-seeded Matkowski/Rojer had little trouble in their first-round match, as did fourth-seeded Djahangiri/Ketola and Clemens/Nguyen. All three teams advanced to Friday's round of 16.
Play continues Friday and concludes with the singles and doubles championships on Sunday.
