The UCLA Women's Water Polo team defeated UC Santa Barbara 13-4 on a stormy day at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. This was the team's first home game and first MPSF conference victory. As with all their games this season, UCLA held the lead the whole match and dominated the first quarter. After this game, UCLA has outscored its opponents 31-4 in the first quarter, and 98-27 overall. This victory moves the Bruins to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF.
The Bruins wasted no time in scoring after the game began. Natalie Golda, Kacy Kunkel, and Kelly Rulon each scored within the first four minutes to give the Bruins and immediate 3-0 lead. The game got rough in the next few minutes with five straight ejections on both teams. At 7.7 seconds left in the first quarter, with a 6 on 5 advantage, Natalie Golda tossed in her second goal to put the score at 4-0. UCSB looked to show some offense in the second quarter. Katy Kunkel, the sister of Bruins Kacy and Kristina Kunkel, scored the Gauchos' first goal at 6:14 in the second quarter. Only 15 seconds later, the Bruins had a fast break down the pool that allowed Thalia Munro to score her first goal. Less than a minute later, Munro scored again. The UCLA onslaught was topped off by Jillian Kraus' first home goal of her career, giving UCLA a 7-1 advantage. UCSB's Dana Saign was able to score a UCSB 6 on 5 goal, making the halftime score 7-2.
The third quarter was very similar to the first. The Bruins scored four times within the first four minutes to take an 11-2 lead. Mica Bell scored for the Gauchos in the last minute of the third quarter, making the score 11-3 at the end of the quarter. In the fourth, Kristina Kunkel and Kamaile Crowell added goals for the Bruins. Katy Kunkel got the last word in by scoring for UCSB on a fast break with 1:44 left in the game. The score stayed at 13-4 and UCLA went on to record their eighth straight victory.
Domanic, Golda, Kraus, and Munro led the Bruins in scoring with two goals a piece. Crowell, Kacy Kunkel, Kristina Kunkel, Rowe, and Rulon had one goal each. Goalkeeper Emily Feher had seven saves. For the Gauchos, Katy Kunkel scored two goals to lead the team. Bell and Saign each scored once. Goalkeeper Rosey Redaelli had three saves.
The Bruins return to action in their next exciting home game on Thursday, February 24th at 3:00 PM when they will face MPSF opponent Hawaii.
