Feb. 8, 2002

Head coach Carrie Leary and the 2002 UCLA women's golf team begin the Winter season Monday at the Palos Verdes Country Club for the seventh annual TRW Regional Challenge.

The tournament field of 18 teams features 15 squads ranked among the nation's top 25, including No.2 Tulsa, No.3 Ohio State and No.5 Georgia.

The 24th ranked Bruins will field a team of two freshmen, three sophomores and a senior for the event.

Last Fall, the Bruins recorded two top five finishes in four events. Sophomore Melissa Martin leads the team with a scoring average of 74.2 and two top 20 finishes. In October, Martin tied for sixth place at the New Mexico State Invitational.

Other UCLA players who will compete are senior Alicia Um, who tied for 11th at the Stanford Invitational, sophomores Krystal Shearer and Johanna Andersson and freshmen Charlotte Mayorkas and Yvonne Choe.
